Calver is a small, stone-built village with evidence to suggest Anglo Saxon settlement. The river Derwent flows through Calver and separates it from the neighbouring village of Curbar. The Bridge Inn stands on the edge of both villages, next to the 18th century bridge.

Until 1920, The Bridge Inn was under the ownership of the lord of the manor and principal landowner, The Duke of Rutland.

Since 1920, there have only been five landlords at The Bridge, the present owners Ian and Lorraine Hayes having been in charge since 1990.
